Atsugishi-cho is located in the east of Hokkaido. It is said that the origin of the word "Atsugishi" is an Ainu word meaning "a place where oysters are", and the town has a deep connection with oysters.
Lake Atsukishi is one of the few brackish lakes in Japan (a combination of freshwater and seawater), and the large amount of nutrients in the water flowing from the river creates the best environment for the plankton necessary for oysters to grow.
Atsukishi is famous for its oysters, and is the only place in Japan where oysters are shipped fresh throughout the year.
